A gateway to Thai contemporary art and culture
The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) stands as a cornerstone of Thailand’s contemporary art scene — a vibrant space where creativity, community, and culture converge. During the COVID-19 pandemic, physical access to the centre was severely restricted, impacting artists, audiences, and the preservation of important exhibitions.
In response, A360 collaborated with BACC to digitally archive key exhibitions through immersive 360° virtual tours. This initiative not only provided continued access during the shutdown but also transformed temporary shows into permanent cultural assets. Visitors around the world can now explore BACC’s diverse exhibitions as if they were walking through the space in person.
The urgency of preserving exhibitions during lockdowns posed several obstacles. Artworks were on limited display, and time-sensitive installations risked being dismantled without documentation. Traditional archiving methods like photos or catalogues couldn’t fully capture the immersive nature of the exhibitions or the spatial narrative designed by curators.
Moreover, it was crucial to ensure that the virtual archive would faithfully reflect the mood, lighting, and flow of the physical exhibitions — all while maintaining high production standards under pandemic restrictions.
A360 utilized high-resolution 360° imaging, custom walkthrough interfaces, and detailed metadata tagging to digitally preserve BACC exhibitions. Each tour was carefully planned to mirror the natural visitor journey, capturing not just artworks but the curatorial layout and atmosphere of the space.
These virtual exhibitions are now accessible on-demand, offering a rich educational and cultural experience for students, researchers, and the public. Through this collaboration, BACC not only overcame the limitations of the pandemic but also expanded its reach, proving that digital archives can deepen engagement while preserving contemporary art for future generations.
